"Brief Glance at Esperanto"

Esperanto was created in 1887 by L.L. Zamenhof who thought there ought to be an easy-to-learn second language that would let people communicate with everyone else.

The language he created is relatively easy to learn (as compared with most national languages) and, although it has not been officially adopted by any national governments or the UN, has garnered a population of speakers estimated to be more than 1 million.

Although there aren't a lot of Esperanto speakers in any one place, you can find some almost anywhere. The people you do meet who speak Esperanto are special -- they tend to be more intelligent than average, are geographically and culturally aware, and are enthusiastic about communicating with people in other countries.

People use Esperanto to make international contacts, to travel, and to reach a global community of people who are interested in international and intercultural communication.

There are many organizations around the world dedicated to helping people learn Esperanto and helping Esperanto-speakers connect with one another.

Esperantists can stay overnight or longer in the homes of other Esperantists around the world, free of charge. The 2007 Directory of Esperantist Hosts lists 1,294 such places in 89 countries where traveling Esperantists can enjoy these free Bed and Breakfasts. Considering that many motels charge $100 and up a night, this feature of the worldwide Esperanto movement is especially popular with younger people.

Treasure Coast Esperantists invite you to join their informal discussion on the Global Interlanguage every Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the veranda overlooking the fountain at the Village Square Coffee & Ice Cream Shop, 925 Village Square, Unit One, U.S. 1, Sebastian. (A Wi-Fi hotspot.) Call Richard at 772-532-7612 for details.
