PROPAEDEUTIC LINGO -- "SAY WHAT?"
Educators often like to use Latin or Greek terms to sound extra smart or something, and this is one of those terms. "In other words..." it means this:
Propaedeutic - pertaining to or of the nature of preliminary instruction; relating to or introductory to an art or science. [<Gk. propaideuein <pro - before + paideuein, to educate <pais, paidos, child]
Therefore, a propaedeutic language is a language which faciliates the learning of another language.
Esperanto is the best language to make the acquisition of another language easier.
Several past European studies of schools with three-year French classes took some students and taught them Esperanto instead of French for the first year. Of course, by the end of that year those students spoke fluent Esperanto. Those who had been taught Esperanto then joined the regular second- and third-year French classes. Naturally, at first they were at a loss, but within six weeks or so had caught up with the second-year students! In the third year, the Esperanto group did better in third-year French than the students who had studied French for the three consecutive years.
In addition to that of course, the Esperanto group now spoke both Esperanto and French!
Recently two new studies have been published in the Esperanto press, one at an elementary school in Great Britain and one is a middle school in Russia.
In future blog entries, I will give the English translation of these studies. I think you will be amazed. You'll wonder why the use of Esperanto as a propaedeutic language is not a widespread practice. I wonder too.
I am available to make a presentation on this subject to any group or school in this area. Call Richard at 772-532-7612
