DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS

DON'T TALK TO STRANGERS

Take a moment to mull over these hypotheticals.

1. Don't talk to strangers.
2. A stranger is someone you won't talk to.
3. If you won't talk to strangers, they will remain strangers.
4. If the stranger refuses to talk to you, you remain as isolated from him and he is to you.

(The following is from the blog of a longtime Esperantist, Allan Fineberg.)

WHAT I CAN'T UNDERSTAND
by Allan Fineberg

"My Uncle Sidney and Aunt Pearl were intellectuals. They loved the arts, ate healthy foods before it was cool to eat healthy foods, and always voted for the right party, unlike me, who always voted Socialist Labor.

"And they liked to use their smattering of French to enjoy the culture of French-speaking lands. I was talking with Aunt Pearl when I was a teenager, and she was delightedly telling me about their last vacation in France.

"Now understand this: they were liberals, dedicated to the notion that all people are created equal.

"I told Aunt Pearl that if I had visited France, I would have been able to visit Esperanto-speakers in their homes, and I'd get to see how people actually lived there.

"She didn't hear me. Instead, she rhapsodized about how they had rented a car and driven through the gorgeous farmland. I mentioned that if she and Uncle Sid had known Esperanto, they may have met an Esperanto-speaking farmer and had an enjoyable conversation about all kinds of things.

"Aunt Pearl didn't skip a beat. "Why ever would I want to do that," she asked, rolling her eyes at me for being such a nincompoop.

"It's been nigh on to fifty years now, and I still think of Aunt Pearl rolling her eyes at me for
suggesting something so ridiculous.

"Are we Esperantists a different kind of human being altogether, or what?"
