Isaac was born on November 16, 2005 to Monica Box and Carlos Mejia. He was thought to be a healthy baby boy, but sadly to our surprise was born with a rare disease known as "Hirschprung's Disease. This is a disease that can affect the small and large intestines and its ability to function. Unfortunately, in Isaac's case it's affected his entire bowel and the medications to sustain his life have now damaged his liver. As a result, Isaac is now in need of a mulyi-organ transplant.
Isaac"s History:
Isaac was full term, a beautiful 8lbs. 4oz. baby. The first time we knew something was wrong was the day after he was born he vomited green bile. At first the doctors thought that it was a mal-rotation in his intestines. Once an enema was done they found that the contrast was not moving through his intestines. They then told us about Hirschprung's Disease, a disease that causes ganglion cells to be absent from part of the intestines. Isaac underwent surgery where hey did an appendectomy and found no ganglion cells so they started to do biopsies up his small intestines. They told us that 99.9% that they would find ganglion cells somewhere in his small intestines. Well, Isaac was the 1% that has no ganglion cells throughout his entire bowel. The only way to treat this is with a transplant. Isaac has already been to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Fl. for his transplant evaluation. They will be transplanting his stomach, liver, pancreas, spleen, small intestines and large intestines. We are now in Orlando awaiting the phone call that a donor has been found. We are running out of time because the only way Isaac can receive nutrition {TPN} is through a Broviac catheter that runs directly into his heart. Unfortunately over time this has damaged the liver. We continue to hope and pray that our precious baby boy will be able to grow up with his loving family.
Update:
Isaac has now received liver, pancreas, stomach, spleen, large and small intestines. He is still in Miami hospital where he will stay until stable enough to come home. He is doing good as of now. He has had a few problems but over all he is OK.
Help Needed:
Today I come to you to ask that you consider doing a story on this miracle baby, Isaac.
We are trying very hard to get information out about Hirschprung's. Plus the form of Hirschprung's that Isaac has is called " Total Intestinal Aganglionosis" and it affects one in every 5000 births. So please help us inform others about this disease by doing a story on Isaac. We know there must be other families out there that are just as lost as we are with Hirschprung's.
