The cold weather couldn’t keep contestants and spectators away from the
Globe Sebastian Inlet Pro
surfing competition. Surfers donned wetsuits and fans bundled up for the third day of the contest, held at
Sebastian Inlet State Park
.
More than 220 male and female surfers from around the world compete for points and $75,000 in prize money during this event, part of the World Qualifying Series for the
Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP)
. Many of the contestants are locals from Brevard and Indian River County, who have surfed the first, second and third peaks of the Sebastian Inlet for years.
Last year’s contest broke attendance records at Sebastian Inlet State Park, attracting more than 18,000 people throughout the six-day event.
"Turnout has been good, despite 30 degree weather," said Mitch Varnes, contest director and head of
Board Sports Management
, "and the waves are going to pick up through the week".
One of the highlights of today’s competition was the Red Bull Tow-At, where surfers were sling-shot into waves by a Sea Doo personal watercraft, giving them the extra speed to perform advanced tricks and aerial maneuvers.
While surfing was the main event, kids found the free giveaways just as exciting. Their attention was focused on the main stage, where contest announcers threw free t-shirts and prizes into the crowd.
The contest continues throughout the week, featuring the women’s finals on Wednesday, Jan 11 and the men’s finals on Thursday, Jan 12, the last day of competition.
