Blog Entry 3 of 28 Big Dog Barks
This blog is about the many people, places, things and events of the Comic, Gaming and Collectable community. “Capt.” Joel Kilmer is a native and life long resident of Saint Lucie County. With a love of comics, magic, herpetology (reptiles) and horticulture (bromeliads) “Capt” Joel is always doing something in the community. Big Dog Comics is the largest comic, gaming and collectable shop on the Treasure Coast and has been serving the community for over 23 years. We are active in supporting positive youth activities and community charities.

I have the right... to never forget!

I have the right to post a blog if I choose. I have the right to speak publicly for, or against, anything at my County Commission meetings. I can run any business I choose. I can speak my mind, in a civil manner, on any subject. The following is the reason I have these Freedoms in the United States of America.

A young man about 22 came in to my comic shop last week with his father who remembered me from my days with the local herpetological society [snake club]. He told me he was recently stationed over in Italy and I said "at least you were safe and quite there," he raised a brow and chuckled "You think so...Huh?"

It seems that if you are a man or woman brave and courageous enough to put of a military uniform of the United States of America you become a Target! During days like 4th of July, Memorial Day, and even Christmas, for crying out loud, people shoot at and attack our servicemen. Even in Italy! Is there a war there? These are the things that happen to our troops that you don't hear on the evening news. I thanked him thru teary eyes and he smiled. [They were tears of pride. Damn it] He said very seldom does anyone say "Thanks".

One of my customers and My Space friends, Tim comes in when he can and talks comics and games with me. He has already done his time overseas. He is a good man in his early 20s and may not have even been born when I started my first store. He has fought for my country along with countless other young men and women who should be reading comics on their day off from work or down time from college, but instead they train hard and take arms to fight for us over seas. Some never see their families again, and for them and there loved ones I weep.

And for what? Oil? Freedom? The whim of our President? I really don't know, but I commend them. Our kids, teens, husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers fight for the USA everyday and earn my respect and heartfelt Thanks. Some leave as children, but ALL come back as Heroes!

We should never forget the men and women who are fighting and dying for this country. This is still the greatest country in the world, never let their efforts and our fore-fathers sacrifices go unappreciated. God Bless America.
