INSECT LABORATORY
Contributed by: Robin Koestoyo on 8/11/2008

---"You're in Florida-there will be bugs." This fact is common knowledge longtime Florida residents consistently share with visitors and new residents. But while people in the "Sunshine State" attempt to minimize the number of insects they must tolerate in homes and offices, some will realize the potential to pursue promising employment in pest management and entomology.

Entomology, or the study of insects, offers employment for privately owned companies, consultant firms and for public sectors. With more than 100 private pest control firms located along the Treasure Coast, the field offers jobs to those who have expertise in the field, and jobs that will not be discontinued so long as there are bugs to control.

The University of Florida/IFAS Indian River Research and Education Center near Fort Pierce offers residents degrees and certificate programs that will lead to a promising career in entomology. The center offers a Master of Science degree in Entomology or Certificates in three options: Urban Pest Management, Landscape Pest Management, or Pest Control Technology. Those who wish to pursue the master degree program may earn a Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Management at the same location.

This fall semester, Dr. Ron Cave, associate professor and one of the two doctorate-level research scientists who carry out cutting-edge research in the UF/IFAS Norman C. Hayslip Biological Control Research and Containment Laboratory, will offer a 1-credit introductory laboratory, "Principles in Entomology." The class will meet on Course participants will attend the class at the biological control laboratory and complete a scholarly collection of insects, under the direction of Dr. Cave, an award-winning entomologist whose work has been featured on the cover of National Geographic magazine.

Dr. Cave said the insect collections will represent various orders and insect families. Participants will learn how to collect, prepare and label specimens for scientific study. Additional course requirements will include laboratory sessions in insect development, aquatic insects, scale insect biology and parasitism and soil insects. Final written reports will describe activities conducted during the sessions along the detailed observation techniques.
