What follows is a poem for the season. It is a plea for peace in world torn apart by warfare, genocide and starvation. It could also be called "A Holiday Prayer for Peace."
Brightly colored lights of the season
Frame windows and doors in green and white
Dot bushes and trees in red and blue.
Lights that blink madly in alternating patterns
On fences,posts, and roof peaks,
Lights that twinkle on stiffly moving automated reindeer,
Tethered to sleighs laden with gold and green foil boxes:
A carnival of lights and electronic wizardry
That soon tires the eyes but impishly prompts the mind to question.
So much light and so many live in darkness?
Pray that the maniacs and the misguided who control our destiny
May see the light finally, sit down together
Share the bread of peace and drink the wine of brotherhood
Pray that we remember the meaning of the light:
Light to commemorate an illustrious birth,
An ancient festival of lights,a promise of hope and salvation for all,
A time, too, of painful, heartfelt remembrance of darkness past.
Remembrance of those we loved and lost-
Of our brave men and women fighting on foreign soil.
Pray that their lives be spared.
Let your love fly like doves across oceans
And deliver messages of your appreciation of their sacrifice.
Remembrance,too,of the oppressed,the starving,the homeless,
The diseased in body and spirit.
As you lift your glass this holiday season
To toast the health and happiness of those you love,
Include in your words of hope for a brighter tomorrow
Those who cannot celebrate with you the joy of this wondrous season.
AND
Pray to God-whatever you conceive Him to be,
That He will watch over us
That He will touch our hearts with love
And make of us all brothers and sisters
Sharing with one another an abiding love of peace.
