Students Give a HOOT at F.K. Sweet!
Contributed by: Pam Holmes on 5/20/2007

Third grade students in Mrs. O'Neal's and Mrs. Johnson's third grade classes have been ingrossed in a study of owls. These fascinating birds of prey are the focus of an interdisciplinary unit centered around Carl Hiassen's novel HOOT. Students have been reading both fiction and non-fiction literature in centers and small groups. They have classified owls by certain characteristics, identified them by their unusual features, and written poems and expository essays utilizing what was learned. Each student was able to dissect an owl pellet, what is couhed up after an owl digests its prey, to discover bones. Bone charts helped the students identify what animal the owl had for dinner. The Treasure Coast Wildlife Sanctuary also visited with five owl species found in Florida. The unit was funded by an Education Foundation mini grant.
