IRSC International Club Receives Grant to Promote Reading Among Young Children

Indian River State College International Club received a $3,000 grant from Target ® to help children at the George W. Truitt Head Start Center in Fort Pierce become better readers. The grant is awarded by Target to strengthen families and communities throughout the country. The pre-school students at the Truitt Head Start Center will read with the college students and receive books for their home and school libraries.

According to club sponsor, Dr. Annie Fuller, "The purpose of the IRSC International Club Reading Program is to promote literacy at an early age, encourage reading, make reading more interesting and help students in their transition from pre-kindergarten to kindergarten. Each month club members will visit the George W. Truitt Head Start Center in Fort Pierce and read stories to the students."

IRSC's International Club strives to promote cultural understanding and to participate in community service. In 2006 Club members created the International Club/ George W. Truitt Head Start Reading Program. For more information, contact the IRSC Call Center at 1-866-792-4772.
