JohnCarrollHigh School won 6 of the 14 St. Lucie County Young Floridian Categories!
The St. Lucie Education Foundation and Indian River Community College hosted their annual St. Lucie County Young Floridian Awards Ceremony on Monday, April 16 th. The purpose of the competition is "to recognize outstanding seniors for achievement and service to their school and community." A Young Floridian Scholarship Award in each category (14 total) is given to the individual whose record of achievement in his or her category and service to school and community best exemplifies the use of one's abilities.
General measurements to determine an individual's qualifications are achievement, leadership, and character.
The competition is open to any high school senior or junior graduating with the 18 credit option and who is a full-time legal resident of St. Lucie County. Students must complete entry packets, which provide a guide for evaluating the candidates' qualifications. The nominees are also interviewed in front of a panel of qualified judges for each category.
Each winner receives a full-tuition scholarship to Indian RiverCommunity College. The winner also receives a $1,000 scholarship from the St. Lucie County Education Foundation, paid to the college of his or her choice upon proof of enrollment, and a Young Floridian trophy.
JohnCarrollHigh School had nominees in 12 of the 14 categories. Their 6 winners were Jillian DaSilva (Academic Excellence), Natalie Angelos (Art), John Johnstone (Business/ Computer Science), Santi Reyes (Drama), Matt Guettler (Mathematics), and Jonathan Errico (Social Studies).
