Memorial Scholarship Awarded to Two IRSC Students
Contributed by: Fran Frazer on 9/7/2008

Indian River State College (IRSC) students Kimberly Stern and Kim Haller were selected as the first recipients of the Captain Adam Snyder Memorial Scholarship Fund for the 2008-09 academic year. This endowed scholarship will be awarded each year to IRSC students who are working and trying to raise a family while at the same time striving to complete their college education.

Kim Stern is married with 7-year old twin boys and she works outside the home. She is also a children's gymnastics coach and assists a cheer-and-dance team in Vero Beach. She would like to become a registered nurse and hopes to be accepted into IRSC's nursing program for the Spring 2009 semester. Her boys were infants when Kim initially tried attending college and she had to postpone her goals for awhile. Now she's an A-student at IRSC and says she's "putting 150% into [her] studies for herself and for her family".

Kim Haller is a single mother of two teenagers. She has worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) for the past 8 years and says that often a patient's face "just lights up simply because somebody cares." After being out of school for 20 years, she decided to return to college to try and qualify for IRSC's LPN program. It proved to be a challenging and difficult task, but she worked hard and has accomplished her goal. In December Kim will graduate from IRSC as a Licensed Practical Nurse. She hopes to continue her education and become an RN involved in search-and-rescue.

The IRSC Foundation has graciously allowed me the opportunity to assist in the selection of the recipients of this scholarship which was established in memory of my son, Adam. It was sheer coincidence that both of these students were planning nursing careers. My family is grateful for the medical personnel who cared for Adam during an attack of appendicitis while on patrol in Iraq during his first tour of duty. It was also the medics who immediately responded after Adam's vehicle was hit by an IED in Iraq in December of 2007. They couldn't save my son, but they saved the life of one of his men who is currently at the Brooke Army Medical Center in Texas being cared for by a well-trained nursing staff.
