FORT PIERCE - In honor of National Library Card Sign-Up Month, Waggin' Tales - St. Lucie County's most unique reading program - will celebrate its three-year anniversary with a "Hooray for Reading Day" party on Saturday, Sept. 6 from 9 - 11 a.m. at the Fort Pierce Branch Library.
The event will feature prizes, games and giveaways, as well as a "Pawtograph Party" with some of the Waggin' Tales dogs. Sophie the Bichon and her owner will be sharing the book "Hooray for Reading Day" by Margery Cuyler in the children's department. Guests may bring their favorite book and select a Waggin' Tales Buddy to sign it with their paw print.
Modeled after the national R.E.A.D. (Reading with Assistance Dogs) program, the St. Lucie County Library System has completed its third year of its own successful program where children participate by reading aloud to a therapy dog.
Additionally during the Sept. 6 event, volunteers will be promoting Responsible Dog Ownership Day with special balloons and hand-outs from the American Kennel Club. A sign-up sheet for the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test will be available. The AKC Canine Good Citizen test is a 10-step test designed to assess canine good manners at home and in the community. All dogs must be pre-registered and provide a current shot record to take the CGC test. There is a $10 charge for the CGC test only. All other events are free.
