'Oklahoma!' arrives at Sunrise Theatre
Contributed by: Gregory Enns on 9/2/2008

The Rodgers and Hammerstein classic "Oklahoma,'' America's best-loved musical, arrives at the Sunrise Theatre for two performances on Friday, Sept. 19, and Saturday, Sept. 20.
Tickets to the 8 p.m. performances are $20, $30 and $40 and can be purchased at the Sunrise Theatre Box office, at sunrisetheatre.com or by calling 772.465.6204.
This production is performed with a live orchestra and showcases all the musical favorites, including "Oh What a Beautiful Morning,'' "Surrey With the Fringe on Top,'' "People Will Say We're in Love'' and, of course, "Oklahoma!''
Set in the Oklahoma Territory in the early 1900s, this joyous celebration of early frontier life is a story of tender romance and dangerous passion as played out by Curly, a sunny good-natured ranch hand, Laurey, the beautiful farmer's daughter he loves, and the brooding and unpredictable Judd.
The musical is a production of the Treasure Coast Opera, a non-profit founded in Fort Pierce 30 years ago by Carlos Barrena, a professional opera singer with tours in Europe, Canada and the United States, and Anne Abood, a Fort Pierce piano teacher. Since its founding, the Treasure Coast Opera has delivered nearly 200 operas and musicals to music lovers in the region.
Despite its longevity, the Treasure Coast Opera has faced two of its toughest financial years due to the downturn in the economy and declining donor support. The Treasure Coast Opera had performed musicals yearly until 1995, when the organization focused exclusively on operas.
But this year, the organization returned to its musical roots to deliver "Oklahoma!'' as both a fund-raiser and an opporunity to begin the celebration of the Treasure Coast Opera's 30th season.
"Okahoma,'' performed several times during the 1980s and 1990s, has consistently been the best-attended musical produced by the Treasure Coast Opera. "One thing we know how to do is put on a show,'' said Abood.
Scripps Treasure Coast Newspapers are sponsoring this year's "Oklahoma!''
The Treasure Coast Opera is the only opera production company on Florida's east coast between Jacksonville and Palm Beach. The opera typically hires professionals in principal roles and in the orchestra while using community singers in the chorus.
The Treasure Coast Opera's regular season begins Jan. 17 with a performance of "Carmen,'' the world's most popular opera, followed by "Die Fledermaus'' on Feb. 28 and "Lucia di Lammermoor'' on March 28. All three operas will be performed at the Sunrise. Tickets to these performances are available by calling the opera office at 772.465.6204.
