The Indian River State College Performing Arts Series is known for bringing outstanding professional entertainment to the Treasure Coast, and the 2008-2009 Series promises to delight audiences with four nationally acclaimed performances.
The Series begins Monday, November 24 with The Capitol Steps. A troupe of Congressional staffers-turned-comedians, the Capitol Steps travel the country satirizing the very people and places that once employed them. Since they began in 1981, they have recorded 27 albums, including their latest, "Springtime for Liberals." They have been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC ad PBS and can be heard four times a year on National Public Radio stations nationwide during their "Politics Takes a Holiday" radio specials.
The series continues on Tuesday, December 16 with Larry Gatlin and The Gatlin Brothers. Larry Gatlin, with his brothers Steve and Rudy as back-up, scored their first hit with "Sweet Becky Walker," then climbed the chart to #1 with "Broken Lady," which earned Larry his first Grammy in 1976. The same year they were inducted into the Grand Old Opry, and in 1977 hit number 1 again with "I Just Wish You Were Someone I Love." The hits have continued with "Denver," "Houston," "The Midnight Choir," "She Used to be Somebody's Baby," "Take Me to Your Lovin' Place," "Talkin' to the Moon," and more.
On Tuesday, January 6, The Golden Dragon Acrobats join the Performing Arts Series for the season's third show. The Golden Dragon Acrobats represent the best of a time-honored tradition that began more than twenty-seven centuries ago. Direct from Hebei, China, the Golden Dragon Acrobats have traveled around the world to all 50 states and to over 65 countries on five continents. With performers trained in the rigorous art of acrobatics since early youth, the troupe has garnered international acclaim, and are proud to have been presented with several major awards including the National Association of Campus Activities (NACA) Entertainer of the Year Award and the Campus Activities Today's Performer of the Year Award.
The Performing Arts Series will conclude on Monday, January 26 with The Four Freshmen, sharing their original close-harmony vocals unmatched by any others. They have earned their stripes with 70 top-selling singles and 6 Grammy nominations. You'll remember the songs: "Day By Day," "Blue World," "Something's Gotta Give," "Skylark," "Early Autumn," "September Song," "My One and Only Love," and more.
