Something exciting and new is happening in northwest Saint Lucie county in Lakewood Park! And, it's happening at the old Indrio Road schoolhouse located at the northeast corner of Indrio Rd. and Emerson Ave. The public is invited and the admission is free!!!
The historic old one-room schoolhouse, which, maintenance wise, had been pretty much disregarded over the last thirty years, is seeing a 'resurrection' to new life in recent months! And, it's all because a small group of people needed a place to worship God back in April of 2005. So, they prayed for a building in which to meet and hold services. The Gathering of the Body of Christ Church is an independent evangelical neighborhood worship center which has been meeting on Sunday mornings at the old Indrio Road schoolhouse for about three years now.
Originally called the Fort Pierce Farms School, the Indrio Road schoolhouse was build circa 1913-1923 and sits in a five acre park. Upon first inspection, the old building had deteriorated to a pitiful state of disrepair. It had definitely seen better days! The pastor was told by many skeptics; "Preacher, you just can't hold church services in that dilapidated old school house! There isn't any carpeting, air conditioning, windows, or screens!!! Who in the world would want to go to church in that place? " The answer? " Anyone who is tired of only being 'entertained' in church, who is ready to stop "playing church", and hungry to get back to the truth of the Gospel of Jesus Christ!" It was true the building had no windows or screens, the interior paint was terrible and peeling in many places, a colony of bees infested the walls, most of the florescent lights and wall sockets didn't work, and it had a host of other problems. The old schoolhouse was in very bad shape; but it had a lot of potential!
Having grown up and attended school in St. Lucie county, Pastor D.L. Bullington recalled that, in his youth, lots of folks held picnics and 'get-togethers' with friends and family at the old schoolhouse and had fond memories of how quaintly "Old Florida" and beautiful it used to be. "Our little congregation knew that it could be again. So, we prayed a lot, stepped out in faith, and asked God to work a miracle for us concerning the old schoolhouse, and that's exactly what is happening now! The Lord does indeed move in mysterious ways, because, in August of 2005 we were led to begin renting the historic old one-room schoolhouse. Everybody pitched in to clean and ready the old schoolhouse, as much as possible, for the first Sunday Meeting. To say the least, it was very 'rustic'!" ; the Pastor said.
"Later, working with the fine people from the Parks and Recreation Department, the Historical Society, and the County Commisioners Office, many improvements were made; most in the last year! The building now has new interior paint, new chalk boards, new ceiling fans and lighting, new window screens, new entry doors and screen doors front and rear, working wall sockets, emergency lighting, fire extinguishers, and is handicap accessible! Halleiujah!! We are Still praying for some things that the building is still in dire want of, such as; the sanding and sealing of the school's beautiful old hardwood floors (somebody painted them grey), windows, exterior paint, drinkable water, public restroom facilities, and someone to play the piano. But, considering what we started with, the new improvements have been nothing short of a miracle! All things are possible through faith in God and His timing. We have now been serving the Lakewood Park community for nearly three years!"
"The Gathering", as we members call ourselves, is a small but dedicated congregation of the Lords' disciples committed to serving the Lakewood Park community and the Lord Jesus by obeying His command to preach the Gospel of His virgin birth, sacrificial death, burial, and bodily resurrection. To worship God in spirit and in truth, to teach and train disciples, and to increase the Kingdom of God by telling others about Jesus, the Christ, His saving grace; and how anyone can receive Him as their personal Savior! We still sing the old hymns that you grew up hearing in church! We still hold the King James Holy Bible as the sole authority of our faith and practice. We are a down to earth 'gathering of believers', the way church used to be; where everybody is somebody and Jesus is still Lord of all! And, we wish to thank the Lakewood Park community for the privilege of allowing us to serve it", said the Pastor.
"So if you're tired of just 'attending' church, and you would like to serve God at a church where you can truly answer His call for your life, or you would like to hear God's word taught and preached in simple, easy to understand terms; please drop by and visit with us! Come fellowship with us on Sunday morning at 9:15 A.M. Study God's word with us at 10:00 A.M. and worhip with us at our 11:00A.M. "Worship and Praise" service. You'll be glad you did! Our phone number is 772-464-2843. We'll be looking forward to meeting you!"
