The word sounds like a secret password to a monastery in the lower Himalayan Mountains, but it's actually a beautiful flowering plant. Pronounced tib-boo-KYE-nuh.
Last year at the annual Fall Garden Festival at Heathcote Botanical Gardens on Savanna Road, I found a plant that looked cool and seemed simple to take care of. I have had Tibouchina plants before but they were the thin leaf type. This one, the Tibouchina grandifolia had big round fuzzy leaves and a wonderful bunch of blooms.
The price must have been fair like most things at the plant show because I don't remember exactly how much it was. I brought it home, sat it near the house and except 2 or 3 times this summer, I ignored it. Well like children that are ignored it said "Hey look at me!" these last few days, with colorful blooms. These plants would look great any where in a yard. With a little spare time this month I plan to plant it near one of my Koi ponds.
Even though I recently rediscovered this "treasure" I know where more are to be found. This Saturday and Sunday, November 18 + 19, Heathcote Botanical Gardens will be having its fall Garden Festival Sale Saturday 9 -4 and Sunday 10 - 3. It's a place for all to meet; from the back yard hobbyist to the Master Gardner there is something for everyone with over 40 venders from around the state with their finest offerings.
I'll be there early Saturday as the great deals run, roll and fly out the front gate quickly. So stop by and enjoy your friends and nature, and ask me a bromeliad question if you want. You don't have to be a pirate to find a back yard treasure. Just look at Heathcote Botanical Gardens this weekend.

Great write-up for a wonderful plant and for a terrific Festival! My Tibouchinas honor the garden spirit in your Tibouchina!
