Palm trees seem to have a magical quality. They soothe the spirit and enliven the soul. They are an invitation to relax in the garden. They seem so pleasantly simple. But they are also complex, fascinating in their many varieties. That's exactly what members of the Garden Club of Ft. Pierce learned this week at their January meeting.
What luck for the club to have Second VP Elena Shelton in charge of its programs! Her neighbor, Araon Bostrack, just happened to be a talented palm expert who was willing to speak to the group. His slide presentation was terrific, with great illustrations of varieties of palms and palm-like plants in different stages of growth. He showed many types of palms - some that were wind or cold tolerant, some were disease resistant, and some that even do well indoors. Discussion included irrigation issues, fertilization needs and pruning techniques. Most questions were answered, except one. Guest speaker Aaron Bostrack was unable to tell us the name of the business he plans to open. We'll have to watch for a cleverly named new palm source in our area, because we know that it will be expertly organized and extremely friendly - just like the owner, our guest speaker.
The club's next guest speaker will be David Williams who will teach about Tillandsia culture on February 14th, at 11 a.m. Meetings take place at the Glidden Park Center, 911 Parkway Drive in Ft. Pierce. If you would like more information, please call President Anna Yanaros at 772-465-8781.
