Lucky You: Great Plants for a Good Cause
Contributed by: Dotty Greene on 9/22/2007

Is your garden talking to you again? Is that spot over there looking for attention? Maybe it just needs a little something new? No, not just any old new plant. How about something grown with Tender Loving Care, right near by, in our very own local growing conditions?

Rest assured, your lucky day is coming! The St. Lucie County Master Gardeners are having their 24th Annual Fall Plant Sale on Saturday and Sunday, October 13th and 14th. They will have a wide variety of plants, "home grown" right here in St. Lucie County from the Master Gardeners seeds and cuttings. Along with the plants, you will be able to get excellent information about the plants you buy and how to plant them. Any suggestions given will be based on studies done at the University of Florida, part of the Master Gardeners training.

You will also have the opportunity to have your soil tested for pH level. Is it more acid or alkaline? That little shred of information can make a big difference on the vitality of your plants. Knowing whether your plant selections are going to thrive in your home garden soil is a good part of the very functional planning rule: Right Plant, Right Place. So bring some zip bags with about a 1/2 cup of soil from each of the areas you have identified for your plants. The testing process may help both you and your plants to enjoy your garden even more.

Of course, no gardener's day is complete without a garden stroll. Your Plant Sale day will give you a chance to see some of the established specialty gardens at the Extension Office. The Discovery Garden is looking good these days with plants that enjoy full sun - yes, even Florida summer sun. And a walk through the Butterfly Garden will show you some examples of both host and nectar plants for our friendly "flowers in flight".

This sale supports the activities of St. Lucie County Master Gardeners, who serve as your connection with University of Florida's research, helping gardeners in our community. In addition, part of the funds raised will provide scholarships for local students who want to work in agriculture related fields. You can see that this Plant Sale will be a special day. Great plants, for a good cause!

We hope you will put on your comfortable yard shoes and spend the day with us. Mark your calendar for October 13th, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and October 14th, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We'll be waiting for you at the St. Lucie County Extension Office, 8400 Picos Rd., Ft. Pierce.

The MG plant sales are the best. If you are looking for plants other than what your local giant home improvement center sells, GO to the sale! Nice sized plants and always very unique. If you love plants, don't miss out on this awesome sale!
