Wise Ft Pierce Gardeners Get Storm Savvy
Contributed by: Dotty Greene on 4/25/2008

Wise gardeners know that planning ahead keeps a landscape beautiful. No surprise, the Garden Club of Ft. Pierce asked the experts to visit with some words to the wise. Master Gardener John Ray and Extension Program Specialist Kate O'Neill gave an excellent presentation on tips to survive summer weather. Sounds a little odd, but we all warmed up to the idea of some garden trimming and organizing which just might ultimately beat the heat, wind, and rain that comes with summer.

After the speaker we had our lunch and business meeting. It was a great time to exchange garden ideas and projects. We enjoyed hearing members tell about their beautiful horticulture exhibits. So much to learn and share.

Great news! Our Scholarship Chairman June Beers announced that IRCC scholarship winner has been selected. We'll tell more about this student in an upcoming story. We also heard from Shirley Walker that there will soon be a sign for the Glidden Park Center which will recognize the building as the original home of the Garden Club of Ft. Pierce. Resounding applause followed!

Speaking of history, the display case in the building entry is looking very smart in its new colors. Green and yellow, our club colors, and Hibiscus, our club flower now set off some historic documents and some present projects. Great job, Jeannette Waltz and Mary Huffman!

Keeping up with our Florida Federated Garden Clubs, three delegates attended the District X Spring Meeting. The highlight of the meeting was a visit to the historic Jupiter Lighthouse. It was an opportunity to learn about our organization, about State and National activities, and about the history of our own area. Lots of ideas to prepare for next year! Very fitting, next on our club agenda is the May 14th Installation of Officers. We are looking forward to a great day, and clearly, another great year!
