Ft. Pierce Gardeners End Year in Colors
Contributed by: Dotty Greene on 6/11/2008

Projects for the '07-08 year were winding up in full color as the Garden Club of Ft. Pierce held its May meeting.

First...a green sign of good times! A new addition to the green Glidden Park sign that stands outside the clubhouse. It recognizes the garden club's federation with state and national garden clubs in 1948. Special thanks to longtime member and 2000-02 President Shirley Walker who spearheaded the effort for the new sign!

With green and yellow being the club colors, it simply follows that the Fun with Flowers Topiary workshop conducted by Jeannette Waltz featured yellow flowers. Members enjoyed the project, creating topiaries, structurally supported by (don't tell anyone) plumbing tools. The finished product was, oddly enough, dainty and delightful! See the attached photos, please.

Logically, these well-plumbed projects would be shown at the next meeting. But the next meeting would be the installation of officers! Only 2nd VP Elena Shelton could make the transition work. The theme for the meeting: Maypoles. Better check the photos for the best plumbed Maypole ever!

Next, Installing Officer Mildred Harward used rainbow colored spirals (think of unicorns) for "tapping" the incoming officers, advising them of their duties, and sending these Maids of the May for a dance around the Maypole. Sounds pretty silly, but somehow it all managed to be fun and inspirational! Folks who have witnessed many of our 60 Installations said that NOTHING could be compared to this ceremony. Great job Mildred!

On with our colors...members were tickled pink to learn that a total of 21 new members had joined the Garden club of Ft. Pierce this year. And wishing for a golden future in garden related studies, Scholarship Chairperson June Beers announced recipient student Kyle Helseth was a most appreciative recipient of payment for 3 credits at IRCC plus $100 for books.

Feeling a little blue that the year has come to an end? Take a look at our other accomplishments this month: Butterfly Garden planted for Treasure Cost Hospice and Container Gardens delivered to 5 Habitat for Humanity families as part of National Garden Week!
