Mothers Appreciated at Best Value Jewelry & Pawn
Contributed by: Wendy Beers on 5/12/2008

I had the unique opportunity to be a part of a wonderful experience this Mothers Day at Best Value Jewelry & Pawn in Fort Pierce, Florida. Greg Childress and Scott Herman of Best Value Jewelry & Pawn had an exciting idea to have a Mothers Day Essay Contest and get the local community children involved. What a brilliant way to embrace the community, give children an exciting way to put their creative imaginations and talents to work, and give kudos to the women in our lives that most of the time (let's face the truth people) , go unappreciated and unnoticed. " We wanted Moms to get a thank you", said Scott Herman, " so much of the time, eventhough we love & appreciate our moms, we don't tell them often enough. This was our way of letting all the moms know that they are special and not taken for granted". Greg Childress added to the comments by stating, " We had so many great entries from the children in the community, it was hard to only choose three winners. They are all winners in my book. We are going to be sending out store gift certificates to all the children who sent an entry. We are also thinking about doing this again for Fathers Day, we can not leave them out".

As I was chatting with the Best Value staff the winners started arriving, anxiously awaiting their prizes. I met with the Grand Prize Winner, 8 year old Christopher Ferguson, who stated, "My mom is so special, she loves me so much, she works hard as a single parent so that she can take care of me and my brother and sister". Christopher brought his Mother, Arlene, his little sister Shyann, and his brother Zachery along to share in his victory. They recieved a $75 cash prize for the child and a $250 gift that his mother got to pick out from the store.

Shortly after meeting Christopher and his family, in walked 9 year old Tia Banks, the 2nd place winner, with her Grandmother Patty and Mother Donna. Tia was the winner of a $50 cash prize and $125 gift for her mother, but Tia sent an essay about her grandmothers efforts in taking care of her when her mother was hospitalized and unable to be there. Tia said, "not only do I think my mom is special, but my grandmother has always been there for me, especially when my mom was sick, she always made sure I had everything I needed". Grandma Patty got a $50 gift certificate as well, for that honorable mention.

Last but not least, the 3rd place winner, Jessica Wright and her grandmother, Patricia Cobb and 2 siblings, Shannon and Lindsey came in the store to claim their prize of $25 cash and $75 gift for her mother. I asked Jessica where her mother was, and she stated, "My mom is going to be surprized, she has no idea that I did this".

What a lovely way to spend mothers day. So much of the time great things like this go unnoticed or unmentioned, I wanted to take the time to say, THANK YOU Best Value Jewelry & Pawn, for building children's esteem, embracing the community and ABOUT TIME US MOTHERS ARE TRULY APPRECIATED!!!
