FPUA Storm Tested - Storm Ready
Contributed by: Camille S Yates on 6/2/2006

Fort Pierce Utilities (FPUA) has recently developed two educational brochures on Hurricane Preparedness and Safety Tips. FPUA prepared the instructive materials to make sure the public is well informed about what to expect from FPUA in the event of a storm. The pamphlets also discuss what people can do to protect their lives and property from hurricanes

The "Storm Tested - Storm Ready" pamphlet explains what FPUA does to prepare for storms. During the last two storm seasons, FPUA's utility system has endured the brunt of three hurricanes. Due to prior planning, the utility weathered these storms well. Several years ago, FPUA developed a comprehensive storm plan, which outlines the roles of all employees in the event of a storm. The plan is updated each year to prepare for hurricane season.

The utility inspects transmission poles every year and electric hardware is inspected every three years. FPUA regularly trims trees that might interfere with overhead electric lines. In addition, the electric system is continuously being upgraded with tougher line installations that exceed the National Electric Safety Code requirements. Also, utilities for any new construction projects are now being placed underground. In addition to purchasing extra supplies of materials used in storm restoration, FPUA also has mutual aid agreements with utility companies in Florida and the eastern US that provide for extra crews to assist with restoration.

The Hurricane Preparedness and Safety Tips brochure enlightens people about what they can do to prepare their electrical, water, and sewage systems for storms. There are also general safety tips included in the document.

To view the documents, go to www.fpua.com or pick one up in FPUA's customer service lobby at 206 S. 6th Street. For more information, call 772-466-1600, ext. 3900.
