Senior Naval Officer Remarks to Treasure Coast Navy League
are Huge Success.
Admiral Gary Roughead, senior four-star, active-duty officer in the Navy and Chief of Naval Operations, spoke to Treasure Coast Navy League Council and community at large Wednesday, April 2 at the Best Western Motel. Two hundred and sixteen guests attended and were delighted with his remarks on where the Navy is heading and how he appreciated the Navy League's support.
On arrival, Admiral Roughead received honors from eight NJROTC cadets from Sebastian River and St. Lucie Centennial High Schools with Master Chief Petty Officer John Pullin USN retired, a Navy League member, piping him board.
After personally greeting many individual attendees, Admiral Roughead was formally introduced by retired Rear Admiral Gil Guilbault, former Council president, who highlighted Admiral Roughead's significant naval career, including his two commands of an Aegis Destroyer and Aegis Cruiser, like the one that recently shot down a satellite in the Pacific. Admiral Roughead pointed out that Guilbault, who was the first commanding officer of the first Aegis Cruiser, USS TICONDEROGA (CG-47), was well acquainted with this impressive and advanced technology, as he was the first commanding officer to take Aegis to sea.
Admiral Roughead emphasized his goals and the Navy objectives. First, he stated that the Navy's requirement is to achieve a 313-ship force, up from the current fleet of 275. He considered that the Navy is well balanced yet requires additional brown-water or littoral coastal combatants. He believes that the submarine threat is still significant, and we need to be prepared for the impressive submarine construction explosion which is occurring throughout the world. He emphasized the outstanding ability and performance of today's Navy men and women. He highlighted that these personnel are extremely well trained and dedicated. Admiral Roughead stated that the US has some 14,000 Navy personnel ashore in Iraq and Afghanistan, which is more than we have afloat in that area. He spoke of the medical advances that the Navy is making in rapid battlefield treatment. He also pointed out the huge humanitarian mission that the Navy accomplishes throughout the world in response to the environmental disasters in Indonesia, other Pacific countries, South America and elsewhere. He pointed out how these efforts have improved America's image and respect globally.
Admiral Roughead stated how appreciative he is of the Navy League's support for the Sea Services and the US Maritime Strategy. He thanked Vero Beach for inviting him to speak and felt very reassured by the enthusiasm and support of those in attendance. It was a very eventful evening and all felt extremely pleased to have attended. After only three hours in Vero Beach, the Chief of Naval Operations flew back to the Pentagon with the Treasure Coast NL Council members much more knowledgeable and committed to supporting the Navy's mission.
