When Charles O. Hines American Legion Post 171 found out that Isaiah Mays a 1925 Medal of Honor winner was finally going to be moved from a paupers grave in Arizona to Arlington National Cemetery, they got togeather and decided to send Willie J. Smith (post historian) and Henry Clayton( incoming commander) to join in with the Missing In America Project (MIAP) to escort the remains of Isaiah Mays , John Callahan and James W. Dunn a proper burial at Arlington on May 29, 2009. While the trip was uneventful, After our Arrival we got a real education about the Buffalo Soldiers and the Colored troop of the civil war. We also found out that there was only one known Female Buffalo Soldier name Cathay Williams who entered the army under the name of William Cathay and served with pride until she ended up in a doctors office and her secret was out and her military career was over. Back to CPL. Isaiah Mays who was bourn a slave in 1858 in the State of Virginia and later entered the military in 1886 . He served in Co. B, 24th Infantry. He received his Medal of Honor for his heroic acts during the Wham robbery May11, 1889. where after being wounded he crawled two miles for help. He diedMay 2, 1925 in an Arizona stae hospital and was buried only with a number on a marker, But after continued efforts of people like Bill McCurtis, the Old Guarl, Arizona Buffalo Soldiers and Ron Eppich of the MIAP Cpl. Mays finaly received Proper Military Honors at Arlington National Cemetery on May 29,2009 at 3pm. Thanks to MIAP and others the flag will be placed at Christina Duel Apache Hunction in Arizona.
