Yes the American Legion is open
Contributed by: henry clayton on 8/20/2009

I am embarrassed to say that in the past we were closed during the day time hours when a lot of veterans needed us to be open. As the new commander I made a pledge that Charles O. Hines American Legion Post 171 will be open every day, seven days a week. So everyday we try to have someone there from 10am until we close at night. I can say we have kept that commitment and we will continue to try to have someone there to answer questions or get answer to questions that our Veterans need help with. I want to be a tool that the veterans can use to get answers to what's bothering them. Some time there is no problems at all, but you can still stop by for comradeship and talk about the good old days.
During my visits to the VA Out patient center I would run into veterans with questions about benefits. Well the other day I ran into a Veteran that had paid into the VA education fund and because of time he had failed to use his GI bill and found out that it was use it or loose it program. May be if he had visited the American Legion post 171 he might have found out that he had ten years to use his education package. I also run into those when asked to join the American Legion they reply that they do not drink. Well surprise I do not drink either . This is a bad assumption that is causing us to loose a lot members. We stand for God and Country and we must start acting like it. I will be the first to admit that we do have a canteen and that is how we are able to do some of the great work we do in the community every year. I can not speak for the other post but we at Charles O. Hines American Legion Post 171 work as many American Legion Programs as possible. We give out scholarships, Honor our dead, we send Boys to Boys State, we visit the schools, we work with the elderly and so much more. We also Make sure that every February we honor Religious Emphasis Month. The one thing that bothers me the most is when a veteran says that he or she do not need anything. Well surprise! some of the benefits are not just for him or her they are your family members also. why not see if there is any thing we can do for them. If you would like to be apart off the greatest Veteran Organization in the world. Please come out and join us. Stop by 1814 N. 21st Street Ft. Pierce, Fl or c all (772) 460-2224 and see just what we are trying to do for our veterans and their Families .
