PORT ST. LUCIE - The St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension Office will hold the "Spread the Shade, Plant a Tree: Tree Giveaway" on Saturday, Oct. 25 from 8 a.m. - noon at Port St. Lucie City Hall, 121 SW Port St. Lucie Blvd.
Funded in part by a grant from the Keep Port St. Lucie Beautiful Committee, the "Spread the Shade, Plant a Tree: Tree Giveaway" is a program offered by the St. Lucie County Cooperative Extension Office to help restore the tree canopy in our community. Trees are more than aesthetic pleasures, they provide shade for homes - cutting energy consumption and saving homeowners money, they improve property values, reduce localized flooding by soaking up rain water, remove pollutants from the air, provide a home for wildlife and much more.
Residents will get the chance to visit the following educational stations: Right Plant-Right Place, Fertilizing, Watering, Pests, Diseases, Pruning or Planting. After visiting five of the seven informative presentation stations on site, residents will decide which one of the five tree choices will be best for their landscape. The following native trees will be available: Fiddlewood, Silver Buttonwood, Dahoon Holly, Gumbo Limbo, Pigeon Plum and Bald Cypress.
