NORTH HUTCHINSON ISLAND - In an effort to improve public facilities through art, St. Lucie County Commissioner Chris Craft will present a $100,000 Art in Public Places grant to the National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum on Friday, Oct. 10 at 11 a.m. at the museum.
"The SEAL Museum is one of St. Lucie County's greatest historical jewels. I can't think of a better place for us to showcase some of our artistic treasures as well," said Craft, who also serves as the Board's liaison to St. Lucie County's Cultural Affairs Council.
Given by the St. Lucie County Board of County Commissioners, the grant will be used to create a Navy SEAL Memorial Sculpture on the museum grounds, which was once the training site for hundreds of thousands of Navy Frogmen in the early 1940s.
St. Lucie County's Art in Public Places Program was created in 1999 by County Commissioners as a way to generate revenue to purchase and place art at publicly-owned facilities. The ordinance allocates 2 percent (not to exceed $100,000) of the funds from any County capital projects worth more than $50,000 into the Art in Public Places fund.
The National Navy UDT-SEAL Museum is located at 3300 North A1A, North Hutchinson Island. For more information about the museum, call (772) 595-5845 or visit:
