Learn To Read
has had a busy and productive year in 2007.
We have helped over 200 people learn to become more literate; speak and read English. We have a computer lab with great software which our learners can use individually. The lab allows us to help learners while they are waiting for a tutor. Our waiting list is 49 learners. We have 101 tutors who work voluntarily on a one-to-one to aid our learners in reaching their individual goals.
We conducted 5 tutor training workshops.
We are always looking for more tutors
.
We are very busy looking for financial support. We are a United Way Agency.
We
THANK
the following for the grants that we have received this year:
Fort Pierce Redevelopment Agency, Friends of the Library, National City Bank,
WalMart, and the Florida Library System.
Our fundraising activites were:
Dessert Party
was a great success, and we thank all the local restaurants who donated delicious desserts.
Tee to Read
was a lot of fun and our Chairman, Keith Andersen, of Roy's
Liquors, worked very hard to make it a great success.
Feast For Literacy
had as the guest speaker, Curtis Aikens, famous chef and
former pupil of a literacy program.Roy's Liquors helped organize a "Wine and Cheese" tasting prior to the dinner and a silent auction helped fill the coffers.
Learners and tutors
were guests at a delicious luncheon held and sponsored at the Fort Pierce Yacht Club. The learners and tutors had a chance to share their experiences with one another.
Bert Nelson climbed on board as an office coordinator via the VISTA Volunteer Program. His help was desparately needed and much appreciated. We are glad he has agreed to help us for another year.
New Board members are Carolyn Smith and Dr. Leslie T. Seaton. We look forward to their imput into the organization.
Our successes: 3 learners passed and became citizens; 1 obtained a driver's license, and many obtained employment.
Our wish list:
More
sponsors,
more
tutors
, desk chairs for the computer lab,
a desk top computer, office supplies: copy paper, HP 74 &75 printer
cartridges, etc.
2008 -
We begin our fundraising year with an

It will be February 2 at the Ft. Pierce Yatch Club from Noon to 4:00 PM
