Lit Lines from Learn To Read

LIT LINESAUGUST 2008

Greetings! We hope you are having a great summer. We have so much news to share.We are moved into our new home, if you haven't been by to see it, please drop by. We have more room for tutoring, five computer stations in the lab, and a conference room where we can hold our board meetings and tutor training workshops.

Our first fund raiser in our new location is a YARD SALE on August 23. If you have any items you would like to contribute, please bring them, or call and we will pick them up.

Future Events: Fund Raisers
September 13 " Beer Fest" at the new parking lot Downtown Ft. Pierce from 1:00 PM til 5:00 PM. Please come and taste many different types of beer, have fun and support LTR.
September 20 "Shop for a Cause" at Macy's in the Treasure Coast Mall. For a donation of $5.00 you will receive a shopping pass that will give you additional 10 to20% on many items in the store (even the ones on sale) plus a chance to win a $500.00 gift card. You may stop by the office to pick up your card. September 27 "Feast For Literacy Dinner" at The Inn of Ocean Village. Come and enjoy a delightful evening beginning with Wine Tasting, Dinner with wine for each course, Dancing and a Silent Auction. You can help by buying a ticket, being asponsor, advertising in theprogram, or donating an item forthe auction. Tickets are $130.00 per person. Call the office for more details.
We are available to come to your organization, such as, Homeowners group, Women's Club, Service club, etc. to speakabout our program. Please call the office if you would like to set up a time with us. We feel that the more people who hear about Literacy, the more who will become involved. We are always in need of more tutors and volunteer help. If you do not want to be a tutor, the office can always use help answering the telephone, filing, data entry on computer, and etc. We also need help with our fundraising activities. Of course a financial donation is also appreciated. As a non-profit organization, we have to be constantly looking for new sources and methods of fundraising. At the present time, we have more than 50 learners waiting for tutors. If you are presently a tutor, and would like to take on an additional learner, please call the office.
Bert, our Americorps/Vista volunteer will be leaving in October. We will need two or three volunteers to sign up for one day a week to help with office duties, such as answering the phone, filing, and assisting Luz Ma.
English Computer Lab There are some great software programs in the lab. If any learners want to take advantage of the computer lab, please call to schedule a time. The Lab is open: Monday , Tuesday, and Thursday: 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM
Wednesday 3:00 PM to 7:00 PM
Next Tutor Training will be held September 20 at our office. Registration begins at 9:00 AM. We will finish at 1:30 PM. Please let your friends know about this opportunity to help others thru tutoring. You do not have to know how to teach to use our program.
September is Membership Month. Please send in your tax deductible Donations:The categories are: Tutor $25.00 Teacher assistant $50.00 Teacher $75.00 Professor $150.00
We have received donations of office furniture from National City and a beautiful table from an anonymous donor. Susan Kilmer and Patti Tobin donated items for the kitchen.
We have received Grants from Wal Mart, National City Bank, Bank Atlantic, Business Women of St. Lucie County, Ft. Pierce Rotary Club, United Way and Wachovia Bank. Scripps supports us through our advertisements.
