On Sunday October 11th, the Avenue D Boys Choir performed at Fort Pierce Lodge #1520. Two hundred Elks and guests attended the program. This was made possible through the Elks National Foundation Promise Grant. Promise grants offer funding to Elks Lodges throughout the United States to host an event that builds the character and competence of local youth. These events give the youth an opportunity to give back through community service, enhance their self-esteem, boost their confidence and heighten a sense of responsibility to the community.
The Fort Pierce, Florida neighborhood of Avenue D has long been known for poverty, gangs, violence, and drugs, but in the midst of this despair are the growing and glowing sights and sounds of hope. The Avenue D Boys Choir is a group of extraordinary at-risk youths who are determined to overcome the entrapments of their environment. From uncertain and diminutive beginnings in 2004, they are now a force for excellence growing in the heart of Fort Pierce and reaching out to the Treasure Coast of Florida and beyond. The Choir is purposely named after the neighborhood to show support for the families, friends and neighbors who live there, and who are also striving to move beyond the negative influences.
The Fort Pierce Elks # 1520 are proud to support these talented boys. In these tough financial times, they truly need our help. They have been utilizing space in various locations for their meetings and rehearsals and are in the process of raising money to build a home of their own. If you would like to learn more about them, please visit their website at www.avenuedboyschoir.com.
