Master Gardeners Nurture Sprouting Scholars
Contributed by: Dotty Greene on 7/28/2007

Have you ever been lucky enough to notice something new growing in your garden? Maybe a new shoot on a well loved plant or maybe something quite lovely just popped up in the mulch? Think about what your response was. Did you wonder if it would thrive without a little help from a friend? Did you puzzle over what next ... feed it or transplant it? Did you ask a neighbor to join you in admiration of this new gift from nature? Bet you've had a similar experience and enjoyed the opportunity to nurture something new in your environment.

Like you, Master Gardeners have noticed new growth and looked for ways to help. This time, the "new shoots" are students. Scholarship coordinator and Vice President Deryl Younge states that for the past 5 years Master Gardeners have identified students with garden related aspirations. Knowing that formal studies are expensive, the group has created scholarships for those students. This year two were offered for graduating high school students and two were available for college level students. Each student was given $500 to help in their developing studies.

With great pride, the Master Gardeners wish to introduce the following recipients:

Bridget Collins has been interested in environmental issues from childhood. She will attend University of Central Florida, studying Environmental Engineering.

Adam Tulp also plans to study at University of Central Florida. He plans to major in Business and minor in Biology. He has developed his interests over the years as he assisted his parents in their pest control business.

Lynnea Kunkle attends Indian River Community College in a pre-veterinary program. She hopes ultimately to complete her veterinary studies at the University of Florida. She learned to love pets when she was five and continues to see their miraculous effects in our world.

Donna Adamski is a member of the St. Lucie County Master Gardeners. She is studying Environmental Horticulture at Indian River Community College. A busy young lady, she works full time at Home Depot while working on her studies. She dreams of owning her own nursery, possibly specializing in native plants.

Scholarship donation is an ideal project for Master Gardeners because education is the focus of their work with the St. Lucie County Extension Service. You might now be wondering how the Master Gardeners funded these scholarships. No surprise, it is was with a little help from some friends. Maybe you were one of those folks. If you bought a plant at the Spring Into Gardening Festival or at the Fall Plant Sale last year, YOU were part of this effort. Your support is appreciated!

Thanks for admiring our four scholarship recipients with us. Each student is truly a gift from nature. You might be able to notice that as you see their smiles in the attached four photos. Meanwhile, next time you notice a vibrant new growth in your garden, please take a look at how you can help it to grow. Nurturing growth in our environment can be a very enjoyable part of life.

Great human interest story. We need to recognize those who are trying to succeed and not problems people...
