222nd Aniversary Signing of the Constitution
Contributed by: Vicki Gehlert on 9/22/2009

On September 16, 2009 President Barak Obama issued a proclamation to celebrate Constitution Week 2009. The proclamation can be viewed at http://www.whitehouse.gov/the_press_office/Presidential-Proclamation-Constitution-Day-Citizenship-Day-and-Constitution-Week/ and starts out.. "The United States Constitution has withstood the test of time for more than two centuries as our Nation's charter of government and the guarantor of our liberties. Signed in Philadelphia on September 17, 1787, this founding document reflects our core values and enshrines the truths set forth in the Declaration of Independence, that we are each endowed with certain unalienable rights. As the beneficiaries of these rights, all Americans have a solemn obligation to participate in our democracy so that it remains vibrant, strong, and responsive to the needs of our citizens."

On Thursday September 17th 2009 the Cora Stickney Harper Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution hosted a celebration in honor of the 222nd signing of the Constitution of the United States. Under the brilliant warm morning sun and on the Indian Riverfront in Fort Pierce, local patriots gathered to honor the flag of the United States and to recall the words of our Constitution crafted by our founding fathers. The United States Coast Guard Color Guard presented the Flags of the United States of America as well as the United States Coast Guard. The flags of the Cora Stickney Harper Chapter and Saint Lucie River Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution were presented as well as the flags representing the Sons of the American Revolution, Anerican Legion Post 40, The National Navy UDT Seal Museum. Bertha White from American Legion Post 40 also played Taps during the presentation of flags.

Mr. Jay Wise, President, Saint Lucie Chapter Sons of the American Revolution led the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag. Pat Giordano, Constitution Week Chairman for Cora Stickney Harper lead the Americans Creed, St. Andrews School students lead the Preamble to the Constition of the Untited States. Chief Warrant Officer David Ladomirak, Commanding Officer, Fort Pierce shared some insights and information about our Constitution.

Constitution week is one of the least known and celebrated official observances. It is the hope of the local chapters of the Daughters of the American Revolution to remain tenacious in sharing with the community the observance of the oldest document still in active use that outlines the self-government of a people. It is a time to reflect on the rights and liberties as well as our heritage of freedom. Cora Stickney Harper Chapter looks forward to another tribute and celebration of our heritage and the Constitution this time next year and looks forward to seeing more fellow patriots there with us! DAR has served America for 116 years as its foremost cheerleader.
