Volunteers are an important part of the team at Treasure Coast Hospices. We serve Martin, Saint Lucie, and Okeechobee counties and offer a variety of volunteer opportunities in Fort Pierce, Port Saint Lucie, Stuart, and Okeechobee to fit your schedule and lifestyle.

Treasure Coast Hospices will hold a volunteer training on Saturday, January 13, 2007 from 9 AM -4 PM in the Port Saint Lucie Office and also at the Mayes Center in Stuart. Lunch will be provided. For additional information please call (772) 465-0660 or 1-800-299-4677.

Questions & Answers about Volunteering with Treasure Coast Hospices

Q: What does a Hospice volunteer do?
A: There are a variety of volunteer opportunities at Treasure Coast Hospices. Patient/Family Support Volunteers and Nursing Home Ambassadors visit patients in their home or nursing home. The volunteer offers emotional support and socialization to the patient and their family. The volunteer may read to the patient, help write a letter, run an errand, fix a meal, or offer a much needed break to a caregiver. TLC Phone Ambassadors call patients and/or their caregivers to provide emotional support.

Administrative volunteers offer office support by filing, making copies, and other tasks at the office. Thrift Store volunteers work at one of the Hope Chest Thrift Stores sorting and pricing donated merchandise, working as a cashier, and providing customer service.

Q: Why are volunteers important at Treasure Coast Hospices?
A: Volunteers are important to Treasure Coast Hospices because they provide support for our staff. They are part of our interdisciplinary team of patient care. Volunteers provide bereavement support and raise money for our patient care funds. Five percent of all paid patient care hours provided by our staff must be volunteer hours in order for our organization to be Medicare reimbursed.

Q: How much time is suggested to donate as a volunteer?
A: We ask that you give 2-4 hours per week realizing that volunteershave their own schedules and activities.We will work around your schedule!

Q: Do I need a health care background?
A: No. We will provide you with the education and tools that you need to do your volunteer work effectively.

Q: What kind of training do I receive?
A: Treasure Coast Hospices offers volunteer training several times a year. The one day training describes the Hospice philosophy, volunteer opportunities and responsibilities, and the many disciplines involved in the team approach of Hospice Care.
