Community Leader elected as president of the St. Lucie County Education Foundation
Pamela Houghten moved to the Research Coast area in 2007, with the recruitment of Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies by the State of Florida. She attended Tyler Junior College and the University of Texas at Tyler where she majored in accounting and minored in management. As she became involved in her children's activities, she discovered her passion for working with children and education. She volunteered in the community schools (K-12) for 15 years, after which time she was offered a position teaching large and small groups of students as well as individualized instruction. She taught at Skyline School in California for 5 years before leaving that position to move to Florida. She held an active leadership role with the Boy Scouts of America for 19 years and with Girl Scouts USA for 16 years.
Houghten is involved with the Science Education Initiative Steering Committee
(Camp OWLS) which seeks to scientifically inspire middle school youth in the four
county regions of St. Lucie, Indian River, Martin, and Okeechobee. With this initiative, she is the Chairperson of the Curriculum Team. Pam is a Board Member of the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce and has recently been appointed to the Workforce Development Board of the Treasure Coast where she also serves on the Youth Council. Pamela Houghten is the Director of Education and Community Outreach for Torrey Pines Institute for Molecular Studies.
Pam has served as a board member for the Education Foundation for almost
two years in the following capacities: board member, grant and scholarship committee member and vice president of the Foundation. Her passion is making sure that children have every opportunity to grow through the educational process and become productive individuals in the community.
