WHY JOIN THE COAST GUARD AUXILIARY?
Contributed by: Terry Barth, FSO-PA on 3/10/2008

When you become a member of the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary, you join a dedicated group of volunteers who love boating and who perform valuable services to the United States Coast Guard as well as the Boating Public. Being an Auxiliarist will add a new dimension to your boating activities and will enable you to share in the worthwhile experience of assisting boaters and saving lives, as well as being an important part of Team Coast Guard.

Here's why you should join:

You'll be working with the Coast Guard to save lives and property.

You are helping to save lives - either directly through Safety Patrols or indirectly, through Boating Safety Courses and Vessel Safety Checks.

Special Training- the Auxiliary and the Coast Guard provide free training on all aspects of boating.

Fellowship - the Auxiliary provides opportunities to meet and have fun with fellow boaters and others with like interests.

So who are these volunteers in the Coast Guard Auxiliary?
They come from all walks of life; they are students, teachers, businessmen and women, retirees,, IT professionals, aviators, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, health care professionals, carpenters, snowbirds, truck drivers, lawyers and landscapers to name a few. There is something for everyone in the Auxiliary.

Eligibility Requirements
Membership is open to citizens of the United States, its territories and possessions, who are 17 years of age or older and who have never been convicted of a felony. To become part of the Coast Guard Auxiliary there are forms that must be completed and an open book test to take. You will be fingerprinted, must show a birth certificate or passport and be photographed to obtain your Homeland Security ID. Each Flotilla (Auxiliary Unit) charges dues and each Auxiliarist must purchase their own uniforms.
