The Second Annual Trash Can Grand Slam Kid's Fishing Tournament was a tremendous success! On March 31, 2008, St. Lucie County, the University of Florida Extension Service, Boys and Girls Club, and Big Brothers and Big Sisters hosted a youth fishing tournament to provide education and a great day of fun! The 68 children in the tournament cruised on the Lady Stuart II out of the HarborTown Marina in Ft. Pierce for a day of fishing. Commissioner Joe Smith welcomed the junior anglers to lunch and spoke to them about the importance of protecting the Indian River Lagoon and their role in the future of a clean and healthy marine environment. Additionally, the Extension Service educated the participants about critical environmental issues involving the Indian River Lagoon, its biological diversity, and the importance of conservation for coastal habitats, marine fisheries, and ethical fishing skills.
After the educational portion of the tournament, every angler was given lunch, gifts, and prizes for participating. Local individuals and businesses made the event possible by generously donating time and money. We would like to thank our sponsors: FishFlorida.org, the Fort Pierce Kiwanas - Sunrise, Sharky's Restaurant, Fishin Chics, Kayaks Etc., Dominick's Restaurant, Alumni International Grill, Aztec Graphics, and Marsha and Paul Hiott for providing a memorable day for 68 children from our community!
