Contributed by: Erick Gill, SLC Media Relations on 2/22/2008

FORT PIERCE - The St. Lucie County Environmental Resources Department continues its weekly Nature Series this month with topics ranging from owl prowls to archeological walks. Held each Saturday at various Environmentally Significant Land sites throughout the county, this series runs through April.

§ Saturday, March 1 from 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. - Pinelands Owl Prowl. Walk the trails at Pinelands with an ERD biologist looking for our local nocturnal featured friends. Please bring a flashlight.

§ Saturday, March 8 from 9 - 10 a.m. - Spruce Bluff Archeological Walk. Discover a ceremonial Indian mound built thousands of years ago, and learn about the immense process of constructing it. Along the way, discover the plants that the early Indians used for food, shelter and medicine.

§ Saturday, March 15 from 10 a.m. - noon - Insects at Teague Hammock. Walk through a hammock of giant oaks and cabbage palms in search of nature on a small scale. Discover insects under rocks, plants and logs by viewing them with your binoculars or by catching them in provided nets.

§ Saturday, March 22 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. - Coastal Plants at Ocean Bay. Ever wonder how early inhabitants of the coastline treated toothaches? Unique coastal vegetation is the topic of this trip, including discussions on how early residents put these plants to use.

§ Saturday, March 29 from 9 - 10:30 a.m. - Spring Wildflower Walk at Indrio Savannahs. Celebrate spring by seeing what has bloomed in the flatwoods and in and around the depression marshes.

Anyone wishing to participate in these unique nature programs needs to register at least one day in advance. Programs are free, but limited to the first 15 people. To register or for more details, call the St. Lucie County Environmental Resources Department at (772) 462-2525 or visit: www.stlucieco.gov/erd.
