Sami Hashmi sat in his home in Vero Beach, weeks after making his family proud at the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., reflecting on the experience.
"I met lots of new people and learned new things," Sami said. "I met people from all over the country, some from Canada, Jamaica and Europe."
Sami won the Indian River County spelling bee to become eligible to compete at the national level. In the national competition, he finished 98th out of 275 contestants. This was his second year competing in the National Spelling Bee.
The National Spelling Bee sponsored a pizza party, a barbecue and an Awards banquet for the students and their families while in the nation's capitol.
"It was kind of nerve-wracking at first, but then I calmed down," he said. "I saw some people studying in the lobby, some kids didn't want to go to the activities."
Sami's mother, Deeba Hashmi, said there was a sort of camaraderie among the contestants.
"It was a very friendly atmosphere, and the bee had many activities for them," Deeba said.
Deeba said she is very proud of her son and his accomplishment.
"The first thing they (the officials at the spelling bee) told them is they are all champions," Deeba said. "They are."
Sami said he will have good memories of his time at the National Spelling Bee.
"I'll mostly just remember the competition, I had lots of fun," he said.
