HUTCHINSON ISLAND, Florida/December 5, 2007 - Port St. Lucie Police Sgt. Paul Grohowski wants to outfit 1,000 youth with bicycle helmets. As a former police officer in Connecticut who was run over by a car while on bike patrol, he knows first hand the importance of wearing a helmet. Numerous bones in his body were broken, with the exception of his skull, thanks to his helmet. "When I moved to Port St. Lucie, I couldn't believe how many children I saw riding their bikes without wearing helmets," said Sgt. Grohowski. "I am passionate about this safety platform." Kenneth Palestrant, M.D., founder of Physicians Immediate Care and former trauma doctor, agrees. "I have seen first hand the unfortunate consequences of what happens when a bicycle accident occurs," said Dr. Palestrant. "The simple use of a bicycle helmet can prevent serious injury," he added.
On Sunday, December 9, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., Sgt. Grohowski, along with several co-workers, are holding a Bike Rodeo & Child Bicycle Safety Event in the parking lot of Superplay USA, 1600 N.W Courtyard Circle, Port St. Lucie, Florida, 34986. "Our goal is to give away 1,000 free helmets to children 16 and under," said Sgt. Grohowski. To accomplish this goal, Sgt. Grohowski is seeking sponsors to help pay for the purchase of these helmets. Louis Patterelli, owner of Sprockets Adventures in Port St. Lucie, is working with Sgt. Grohowski and has been successful in negotiating a reduced price for the helmets.
For sponsorship contact Louis Patterelli at (772) 336-3399, or Sgt. Grohowski at (772) 879-3301.
Additionally, with the help of the police department's evidence section, dozens of unclaimed bicycles will be available for distribution to needy children.
The event will feature a bike safety course taught by police officers, a cookout provided by the Police Explorers, police giveaways, and more. Additionally, Dr. Palestrant will be on hand to talk about helmet use and the potential consequences of not wearing one when riding a bicycle. For more information about the event, contact St. Paul Grohowski at (772) 879-3301. Dr. Palestrant also is available for interviews at (772) 398-1588.
