Local Museums Celebrate Martin County's Birthday
Contributed by: Renee Booth on 8/3/2006

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, STUART- The Historical Society of Martin County and Stuart Heritage are celebrating the founding of Martin County and want all county residents to get a free education about local history! On Saturday, August 5, the Elliott Museum will join with the Stuart Feed Store to offer FREE ADMISSION to all Martin County residents. In 1925, a number of prominent businessmen formed the County Division Committee, chaired by Edwin Menninger, after earlier attempts to create a new county in the St. Lucie River Region were unsuccessful. The bill creating Martin County, named after incumbent governor John Martin, passed the Senate on May 28, 1925 and was signed by the Governor two days later. On August 5, 1925, Martin County was official!
In an effort to accommodate more visitors to the museums, the Elliott Museum and the Stuart Feed Store in downtown Stuart will be open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM on August 5, offering self-guided and guided tours throughout the day.
"From shipwrecks to early pioneer families, this is a great opportunity to educate our community of Martin County's rich history," said Pam Fogt, Historical Society of Martin County Board Chairman. "We are glad to have the opportunity to work closely with Stuart Heritage and expose our community to the full range of historical offerings in the area."
Headquartered at the Elliott Museum in Stuart, The Historical Society of Martin County was founded in 1956 and operates both the Elliott Museum and The House of Refuge Museum at Gilbert's Bar. The Historical Society collects and preserves American life in the context of the St. Lucie River region. It is a private non-profit institution and relies on its 800-plus members to continue the mission of educating the community about the richness of our area. The Elliott Museum houses one of the finest collections of American antiques, decorative arts, baseball memorabilia and vintage automobiles that celebrate the Golden Age of American creativity, and of course, local and Florida history.
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, The House of Refuge, built in 1875, is Martin County's oldest building and once served as a refuge for shipwreck victims along our rocky coastline. The House of Refuge Museum is temporarily closed due to damage caused by the 2004 hurricanes.
Stuart Heritage is an organization of volunteers who encourage preserving local history of Stuart and the surrounding neighborhoods throughout Martin County. Stuart Heritage operates the Stuart Feed Store in downtown Stuart as a museum to show and tell the history of Stuart and Martin County.
