Diana Kan Exhibits at the Elliott

A Special Elliott Museum Presentation:

Chinese Painter Diana Kan

HUTCHINSON ISLAND, STUART- The Elliott Museum will exhibit the work of Oriental Watercolorist Diana Kan, from March 4 through April 6, 2006. A reception to open the exhibit will be held Thursday, March 3, from 5:30-7:00p.m at the Elliott. The reception is open and free to the public. Diana Kan is scheduled to attend the reception. Photos by photojournalist Jefferson and art photographer Sing Si will also be on exhibit with Kan.

As one of the world’ premiere Chinese painters, Diana Kan has won acclaim and recognition worldwide. Her mineral and watercolor paintings capture the ancient Chinese Philosophy of expressing time and nature through art. Born in Hong Kong in 1926, Kan studied the art of calligraphy with her father, and held her first exhibit at the age of nine. In the mid 1940’s, she began studying with renowned artist and teacher, Chang Dai Chen, beginning pupil-disciple relationship that would last for almost forty years. In 1949, Kan traveled to the United States and enrolled at the Art Student’s League in New York, where she began her exploration of Western Art.

Since 1948, Diana Kan has held over 40 one-woman shows on four continents along with numerous group shows. She is the recipient of many international awards and belongs to such prestigious organizations and clubs as The National Academy of design, American Watercolor Society, The National Arts Club, Salmagundi Club and the Lotos Club. Her work is housed in many private and corporate collections around the world, as well as major museums including The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art and the National Historical Museum is Taiwan. Diana Kan’s book, “The How and Why of Chinese painting” which was first published in 1974, has become a standard text and reference work in college art courses.

Headquartered at the Elliott Museum on Hutchinson Island in Stuart, The Historical Society of Martin County was founded in 1956 and operates both the Elliott Museum and The House of Refuge Museum at Gilbert’s Bar. It is a private non-profit institution and relies on its 800-plus members to continue the mission of educating the community about the richness of our area. The Elliott Museum houses one of the finest collections of American antiques, decorative arts, baseball memorabilia and vintage automobiles that celebrate the Golden Age of American creativity, and of course, local and Florida history.
