Day campers learn about marine life up close
Contributed by: Jeremy Ashton/YourHub.com on 6/23/2006

Tuesdays in June move at a hectic pace at Martin County Schools' Environmental Studies Center.

On one particular Tuesday, a group of fourth-graders strapped on life vests near the Jensen Beach Causeway. They were preparing to take a boat trip to grass flats in the Indian River Lagoon, where they would study local marine creatures.

Meanwhile, older students grabbed seining nets and waded into the lagoon. During the next half-hour, they collected sea horses, puffer fish, hermit crabs and just about anything else they could catch and placed their specimens in buckets.

After a brief stop at the center to move their catches into aquariums, the students went to lunch - at the beach.

For six weeks this summer, Martin County students in grades 4 through 8 are exploring marine habitats along the lagoon and soaking up some sun in the process at the Environmental Studies Center's summer camp.

The center's regular staff members, along with teachers and older students, are leading campers through activities including seining, boat trips, fishing, snorkeling and arts and crafts.

Parents are paying for students to go to the camp on a weekly basis, but some campers are returning for several sessions, said ESC teacher Bill Reamer. The camp is full through its closing date of July 7.
