We live in a tropical paradise! While every winter we sit and smile while we watch those up north dig out under tons of the white stuff, we have a con to deal with here. Mold. The black ick that tends to grow anywhere it is hot, moist and humid. Mold tends to thrive in places where water, humidity and heat combine. Unfortunately, air handler coils and ducts tend to be great harborers of mold, especially when they are shut off during the winter months, or if they have been sitting all summer long while the house was vacant. Many people can tell by the smell if they have a problem, but not always. If you have been experiencing symptoms that are associated with an allergy such as, coughing, runny or stuffy nose, allergy eyes, general feeling of malaise, or increased asthma or breathing difficulties, these could also be signs of mold.
It is not always easy to see mold, and to be absolutely certain, you must have it tested by a certified mold remidiation company, but some general things you can look for are if there is a black dirt looking substance on your air handler coil or in your emergency drain pan. If you are uncertain, an air conditioning contractor can come in and do a maintenance inspection. During this inspection, he will be able to tell youif it looks like it may be mold, and you can then either treat is as if it were mold, or have a mold remidation company come and test it for you. Ocean Breeze Cooling offers a maintenance inspection for $69.95, but if you call now, we will take off $10.00, just mention this article in your hub. You can also go to our website at

If you suspect mold,a UV light would be the first weapon of choice to destroy mold in its tracks. These are extremely effective in not only killing mold, but also bacteria, fungi, and viruses that flow through the lighted area. Couple this with a more effective filter, and you have a powerful ally in your fight against mold and other allergens as well as airbore disease.
