Several members of the Fort Pierce Coast Guard Auxiliary assisted Santa by giving out free life jackets to local kids. April Price, from the Marine Industries Association, contacted Flotilla 58 requesting our help in handing out these donated jackets at the December 8th Christmas Boat Parade. We accepted immediately! We look forward to attending any event where we can promote the wearing of life jackets to kids and adults.
One of the most important missions of the Auxiliary is to spread the word to the public that life jackets save lives and to "JUST WEAR IT"! If we can teach the children at an early age the importance of wearing life jackets, they will continue that habit into adulthood. Children have a strong, positive influence on their parents as well. Frequently if the kids have to wear a life jacket, they insist their parents wear one also. Now that's a "win-win" situation!
The children were thrilled with their new life jackets - many refused to take them off and wore them the entire evening!
They also received safety whistles, water safety activity books and "wear your life jacket" Frisbees.
Adults were given information about our upcoming Boating Safety classes and also how to obtain a free Vessel Safety Check. The evening was a great success and we look forward to being their next year!
Our next Boating Safety Course will be Saturday, February 16th from 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information or to register, please call Stephanie at 772-466-6587 or Gary at 772-321-3041.
