Hair Removal At The Speed Of Light?
Contributed by: Dorothy Kamm, Yates & Associates on 7/17/2008

Unwanted hair has been an issue for thousands of years. Even ancient Egyptians had their method of removing body hair using a process called "sugaring", similar to modern methods of waxing. Ancient Egyptians applied a syrup-like paste to the body, allowed it to harden, and then pulled it off. Ouch!

Thankfully today there are numerous and less painful methods of removing unwanted body hair. While waxing, shaving and dissolving creams all accomplish this task, each method must be frequently repeated. Two more permanent methods include laser hair removal and electrolysis.

Laser allows a fast and easy procedure for all skin types, including tanned skin. "Because of the relatively low absorption of this light by melanin, certain types of laser are the best choice for treating darker skin," explained Cheryl Herndon, ARNP, Director of Aesthetic Services for Women's Health Specialists. "It also is very effective for lighter skin because the laser selectively targets microstructures, such as hair follicles," added Herndon. Laser shortens treatment time because large areas can be treated at a time.

There are certain factors that deter laser as the choice method of hair removal. Laser hair removal does not work on white, blond, gray or red hair. What, then, is a light-haired person who desires permanent hair removal to do? Consider electrolysis, a time-tested method invented more than a century ago. Back then, electrolysis was used to remove irritating, in-grown eyelash hairs, a precise procedure made possible by inserting a fine probe into a hair follicle and sending an electrical pulse through it.

With electrolysis, when a hair follicle is treated, it likely will not re-grow. The downside is that electrolysis is painful, tedious and time consuming. Cost-wise, it is about equal with the cost of laser treatment.

"Whatever method you choose, it's important that you do your homework," said Herndon. "Make sure that the person providing the treatment is professionally trained and licensed." Herndon also provides safe laser skin treatments for collagen remodeling; wrinkle reduction; rosacea; skin tightening; facial pore reduction; and acne scar reduction.
