The Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute’s (FWRI) Marine Mammal Group is dedicated to protecting and conserving the Florida manatee through scientific research and education. Biologists at FWRI help conserve Florida manatees by conducting research that provides information to managers working toward population recovery: they evaluate the status of the endangered manatee by rescuing distressed manatees; identifying causes of mortality, disturbance, and injury; maintaining individual photo-identification catalogs; conducting population studies; evaluating habitat use by manatees; and participating in other recovery activities.
The Wildlife Foundation of Florida has established the Marine Mammal Research and Education Fund to help support continued research and rescue efforts at FWRI.
