"la maison Fleurie" (The House of Flowers), a tropical botanical garden in Rio/Jensen Beach will be open to the public on the first Saturday and Sunday of each month beginning on January 6 and 7, 2007 from 1 to 3 p.m. The garden is also open for tours by appointment.
The garden began as a private pleasure in 1985 for Florida's Artist and published author, Karinluise Calasant. Calasant and her partner, Al "Frog" Kreinbring have since turned this pocket-size paradise of only 8,000 square feet into an accredited botanical garden of over 2500 species of native and tropical plants. Featured in the garden are extensive collections of palms, heliconia, bromeliads, and naturalized orchids, plus many more rare and indigenous plants from all over the tropical world.
"la maison Fleurie" is entirely organic. No toxic chemical pesticides, herbicides, or commercial fertilizers are used. It is a xeriscaped garden, and water conservation and recycling methods are used in connection with an ongoing composting program. The garden is also a certified wildlife habitat.
"We are committed to educating the public about the benefits of environmentally friendly gardening, and the importance of creating backyard habitats for Florida's wildlife."
For further information about the garden, please call 772-334-1094.
