Martin County's newest botanical garden, "la maison Fleurie" (The House of Flowers) in Rio/Jensen Beach, will offer "Ornamental Palm Culture for the Home Gardener", on Saturday, March 3, 2007, from 1 - 2:30 p.m. Class size is limited, and those interested must register in advance by calling (772) 334-1094.The program is being offered free of charge, but donations are appreciated.
The program will begin with a guided tour of the garden's collection of 82 Genera and 110 species of rare and indigenous palms from all over the tropical world. Discussion will follow on the proper identification of palms for the layman; palms best suited for Treasure Coast gardens; palms for small spaces and containers; culture and maintenance of palms for the home gardener; and growing palms organically.
"La maison Fleurie" is not-for-profit, and is a new member of the American Public Garden Association. This "pocket-size", mature garden has been in existence since 1985 andis a demonstration of how to grow thousands of unusual and rare tropical plants within the confines of an average-size subdivision lot. Guided tours will be held on Sunday, March 4, from 1 - 3 p.m. and also by appointment. Call for more information and directions.
