Contributed by: Kimberly Banta on 7/3/2007

STUART, Florida/June 6, 2007- An estimated 60,000 people attended the 13 th Annual Red Cross/Expert Shutter Hurricane Fair this past weekend at the Treasure Coast Square mall in Jensen Beach. The largest hurricane preparedness event of its kind in Florida drew attendees from throughout the Treasure Coast region. A total of 49 exhibitors and vendors participated in the two-day event.

"The Red Cross/Expert Shutter Hurricane Fair is designed to showcase the latest in technology, preparation and information vital to weathering the big storms," said Rob Shelt, Director, Disaster Services, American Red Cross Martin County Chapter. "Based on the huge crowds, both Saturday and Sunday, Treasure Coast residents understand the need to be better prepared should a hurricane or tropical storm threaten our area," Shelt added.

The 13 th Annual American Red Cross/Expert Shutter Hurricane Fair also featured the Red Cross Disaster Education Simulator. The simulator allows anyone who has not experienced a hurricane the opportunity to feel the sound and fury of the big storm without the associated dangers. "We will be scheduling the Disaster Simulator at a variety of events and functions throughout hurricane season. Our goal is to make sure everyone is better prepared to survive and recover from a hurricane," said Shelt. "We all know it is not a matter of if we are going to have a hurricane again in Martin County. It's just a matter of when will it happen," concluded Shelt.
